Kankakee Valley High School’s girls wrestling program is entering its third season with growing momentum and confidence, led by head coach Brian Culbreth.
According to Coach Culbreth, the Kougars are returning with a strong and youthful roster eager to expand their depth across more weight classes. The team aims to continue building on the culture of hard work and mentorship that has characterized its early success. Culbreth highlighted the team’s growth, noting it has expanded from six wrestlers in its first year to 18 last season and maintaining that number this year. He emphasized a “family-oriented” culture that values every athlete, stating, “We don’t leave anyone behind,” as he aims to mentor and lead by example.
Sophomore Taitym Nevills expressed her focus on improving technique and earning a varsity spot this season. “I just want to pay attention more and learn some of the basics,” she said. Lilly Culbreth shared her goal to “win sectionals and make it to state,” while Mara Graf, who overcame an injury last season, hopes to qualify for state competitions and eventually wrestle in college.
The Kankakee Valley team is set to compete at the Highland Invitational at Highland High School on Saturday, November 15.
