Kankakee Valley High School’s cross country team has seen individual successes among its runners, Jenna Walker, Matthew Hoffman, and Krista Sytsma. Each athlete has found unique sources of motivation in their journey through the program, focusing on family influences, personal growth, and competitive spirit.
Throughout the season, the Kougars’ cross country team has demonstrated discipline and focus. The athletes have logged numerous miles and overcome various challenges presented by the courses they run.
Sophomore Jenna Walker began her running career when her father signed her up for a 5K race at seven years old. “I’ve been running for a long time,” she said. “Once I started cross country in sixth grade, I just kept doing it.” Senior Matthew Hoffman, whose father is a coach, finds his drive in competition. “I like to win. I hate to lose. That’s what drives me the most,” he said. Junior Krista Sytsma draws inspiration from her family’s running background and emphasizes persistence as key to success. “When it gets challenging, you want to back off,” she said. “But you just have to keep going.”
According to school officials, Kankakee Valley continues its offseason training as runners set new personal goals for next year’s cross country campaign.
