Kougars deliver strong efforts at Indian Open

Kankakee Valley’s boys track and field team produced several competitive performances across sprint, distance, relay, and field events at the Indian Open indoor meet against a large regional field.

The event brought together teams from throughout Northwest Indiana on March 7 at Portage Indoor in Portage, Indiana. The meet was held on a 200-meter flat track and featured athletes from multiple schools. Kankakee Valley’s participation included strong showings in both individual and relay events according to the school.

In the 60-meter dash, Nolen Kooistra led the Kougars with a 24th-place finish in 7.27 seconds. Freshman Bryce Moore finished 38th with a time of 7.52 seconds, while Tyson Whittington placed 47th at 7.64 seconds. The Kougars’ 4×200 relay team—composed of Whittington, Kooistra, Zachary Gutierrez, and Moore—placed 15th with a time of 1:41.32. The team found its strongest success in distance events by finishing sixth in both the 4×800 relay (9:11.50) and the distance medley relay (12:17.63) according to the school.

Field event highlights included Braiden Huff placing seventh in pole vault by clearing 10 feet, 6 inches. Brevin Whaley finished tenth in high jump at 5 feet, 4 inches and also achieved a seventeenth-place mark of 18 feet, 7¼ inches in long jump. Dylan Adams led the shot put group with a throw of 36 feet, 7 inches according to the school.

Kankakee Valley will look to build on these results as the indoor season continues and athletes prepare for upcoming spring meets.
