Kougars fight hard and honor loved ones on Strike Out Cancer Night

0Comments

Kankakee Valley and Illiana Christian clashed in a non‑conference varsity softball matchup, with the Vikings prevailing 12–8.

The battle unfolded on Friday, May 15, during the Strike Out Cancer Night at Kankakee Valley High School, where the Kougars honored loved ones affected by cancer while competing under the spotlight of community support.

Illiana Christian stormed ahead early, scoring five runs in the first inning and seven more in the third to build a commanding lead. The Kougars, however, showed resilience and heart in front of their home crowd. Their bats came alive in the later innings, pushing across four runs in the fifth and another four in the seventh to close the gap. Key contributions came from Hailey Shepherd, who doubled and singled while driving in three runs, and Danielle Gidley, who added two hits, including a double. Jess Beauchamp and Mallorie Rose also chipped in with multi‑hit performances, helping KV rally back into contention.

On the mound, Beauchamp and Rose combined for nine strikeouts, with Rose steadying the defense over five innings.

Though the Kougars fell short, their late surge and spirited play reflected the night’s theme of perseverance. KV’s effort honored the cause and showcased their determination against a tough Illiana squad.
