Declan Murr said leadership through example will be critical as Kankakee Valley baseball transitions to a roster with many new contributors.
The team is entering a period of change, with several new players expected to contribute this season. Murr, one of the returning starters, is expected to take on a larger role both on the field and in the clubhouse, according to Kankakee Valley High School.
Murr emphasized his approach to leadership by saying, “I try to really set an example. Whether we’re in the weight room or at practice, I try to stay productive the whole time and show the younger guys how to use their time the best they can.” He added, “Even though we’re seniors, we’re still in there working. We want the younger kids to see that and follow it,” according to Kankakee Valley High School.
Team chemistry remains a priority for Murr. “We’ve got a great group of guys that all get along. We’re building bonds from freshmen to seniors,” he said. If that chemistry continues, Murr believes Kankakee Valley can compete throughout the season despite lineup changes, according to Kankakee Valley High School.
