Kankakee Valley freshman Ayden VanWienen gained valuable postseason experience during his first varsity season, competing against some of Northwest Indiana’s top wrestlers while establishing himself as a future contributor for the Kougars.
VanWienen’s performance is seen as an important step in his development within the Kankakee Valley wrestling program. The school said his exposure to high-level competition provided significant growth opportunities early in his high school career.
According to Kankakee Valley High School, VanWienen competed throughout the 2025-26 postseason series, advancing to the Crown Point Sectional at 113 pounds as part of Kankakee Valley’s lineup. The freshman finished the season with a 17-12 overall record while adjusting to the demands of varsity competition in a deep weight class. VanWienen earned a fourth-place finish at the sectional level, highlighting what was described as a strong debut campaign against experienced upperclassmen. Throughout the season, he faced several ranked opponents, including Munster’s Julian Gonzales, Hanover Central’s Carter Gary and Lowell’s Tyler Quarles, gaining experience against some of the region’s most competitive programs.
VanWienen continued to battle through challenging matchups, including contests against Crown Point’s Sam Westfall and New Prairie’s Nicholas Freeze. Competing in high-level postseason environments provided important development opportunities early in his high school career… With three seasons remaining, VanWienen’s freshman year established a strong foundation as he continues to grow within the Kankakee Valley wrestling program and build toward future postseason success.
The school credited VanWienen’s efforts this season as laying groundwork for potential future achievements with three years left in his high school career.
